A Few Words About Structuring An Academic Term Paper


Making use of proper essay structure is a critical skill that you will develop during your time at school. There are different ways to lay out the information and/or argument that will be covered in your term paper. Regardless of which way you approach your topic, it is essential that your final paper be easy to follow, have a good flow, and present sufficient evidence to support any claims that you have made.

When composing an academic paper, it is of particular importance that your argument is concise, clearly laid out, and not too “wordy”. Stick to the point, and avoid long-winded descriptions of your subject. Everything that you include in your essay should serve to support the thesis, or claims that you made in your opening paragraph.

Always Have A Plan

Preparing a good outline will make the job of writing an academic paper far easier. Have you been assigned a specific topic, or are you free to write about what you choose? If you have any doubt as to the topic of your paper and how you have decided to approach it, consult with your course supervisor. Start off on the right foot, with a clear idea of what direction you want your composition to take. A good outline will inevitably save you time, and reduce stress, as you progress with your work.

Write It All Down

You will need to pay attention to ensure that your paper is structured in a comprehensive, easy to follow fashion. Many academic papers are modeled on the “five-paragraph” approach to essay composition. Your particular composition may be more or less than five paragraphs, of course. However, it should always include the following components:

An Introduction

You only get one chance to make a first impression! A strong opening argument or statement will get the attention of your reader right away. Briefly outline the evidence to support your claims. Keep it brief! You'll have plenty of time to elaborate your thesis defense in your body paragraphs.

Your Body (Supporting) Paragraphs

Each supporting paragraph will provide a piece of evidence, fact, or reference to a case study that backs up the thesis in your opening paragraph. Each paragraph should open with the supporting data you will present, and then how it will help make your case. Try to have your closing sentence lead the reader on to the next point to be made in the following paragraph.

Your Conclusion And Closing Statement

Pull together all the aspects of the paper in your conclusion. Wrap it up in such a way that your original thesis is reinforced, and you are proven irrefutably right!

Always remember to leave time for a careful proofread, and a final edit!
