Information About Activities (Achieve3000, DanceProgram, 4-H)

With the help of the UTO and Butts grants, we have purchased and are launching the use of Achieve3000 software, a computer program which provides newspaper articles from the Associated Press, comprehension questions and activities all targeted to each child’s reading level. This program is available in both English and Spanish to meet the needs of our bilingual participants. The children will work on phonics and reading as well as doing integrated reading and research around their field trips.

Currently, we are assessing the literacy skills of the children in the After School Program and developing individualized plans for them. Starting in November 2011, the children use the Achieve3000 computer program for targeted reading and activities at least two times a week for 40 minutes each session. To complement the Achieve3000 program, two or three times a week staff lead the children in group reading using Tri-C Literacy Publications, a program specifically designed for after school programs. Tri-C Literacy Publications increases children’s motivation to read and their literacy skills by having them listen to a story read aloud, participate in group discussions and activities and make connections to their lives.

New this year, we also have a partnership with Passaic County 4-H who will be providing a Science and Technology Curriculum for our After School youth and NJPAC, who will be providing Dance Classes to our students twice a week.
